Chattering in English / 英語でペチャクチャ

The other day, when the writing by my son at school have been returned, I saw his article such as picture. I am glad that CSC is also affecting my son. Be aim beyond me, my son.

My father makes a business trip to Morocco from April. At first I was thinking "Morocco" as a "trolley (train)". My father was burst out laughing. Every Monday, he is chattering with people from many countries in English. I thought "Wow!" and "Cool!". I want to be able to chatter English like my father.”

先日、息子の学校での作文が返却されてきたら、こんなものがありました。CSCが息子にも影響を与えているならうれしい限りです。息子よ、父以上を目指してくれ。

『ウキウキ、ドキドキ。
父が、４月からモロッコに出張する。僕は最初、「モロッコ」のことを「トロッコ」と思いちがいしていた。父は爆笑していた。毎週月曜日に、いろいろな国の人と英語をペチャクチャ言っている。ぼくは「わーお」「すげーえ」と思った。自分も父のように、英語をペチャクチャ話せるようになりたいです。』

「ウキウキ、ドキドキ」と「ペチャクチャ」は、英訳に困りました。（笑）

NHK World / NHKワールド

I am struggling every day in English with members of the CSC team. I searched for easy-accessible leaning English materials in every day, and the most interesting thing is "NHK World". (NHK means Japan Broadcasting Corporation.  Japan’s only public broadcaster. Like BBC in UK and PBS in US.)

You can watch it from smart apps and Amazon Fire TV. It's free.

You can watch it in English for 24 hours, including the every hour's news show, original program about Japanease culture and Sumo, and the Japanese translation of the NHK program, and so on. It supports on demand as well. This broadcast is also suitable for foreigners who want to know about Japan.

It doesn't have English subtitles, so if I do not listen quite intensively I will miss it, but I think that it's easiest way to make my head an "English brain". When I am in my room , I use Fire TV to keep it flowing from the monitor all the time.

英語字幕はないので、かなり集中して聞かないと聞き逃してしまいますが、頭を英語脳にするには、これ以上の方法はないかな、と思っています。最近自宅の部屋にいるときは、Fire TVを使って、常にモニターから流すようにしています。

Moroccan specialties are / モロッコの名産は

Speaking of Moroccan specialties and souvenirs are Argan oil, leather goods such as wallets and bags. Seniors CSC member who was deployed on to Morocco are sure to say "carpets". They said it's better to measure the size of your room at home in advance. Certainly, looking at the Moroccan guide book, the topic of carpets often comes out.

Besides,  Tagin pots, pottery, Babushu (Moroccan leather shoes), ore, brass products, parquet work etc are also famous.

モロッコの名産、お土産といえば、アルガンオイル、財布やかばんなどの革製品がありますが、モロッコに派遣された先輩から必ず言われるのは、絨毯です。あらかじめ、部屋の大きさを測っていったほうがいいよ、との事。確かに、モロッコのガイドブックを見ていると、絨毯の話題がよく出てきます。
他にも、タジン鍋、陶器、バブーシュ（モロッコ独特の革靴）、鉱石、真鍮製品、寄木細工なども有名なようです。

Englih, French and Arabic / 英語、フランス語、アラビア語

I am struggling every day in English with members of the CSC team, but in Morocco they do not use English.

The official languages ​​of Morocco are "Arabic" and "Berber". However, there are times when it was once French territory, in fact the language in which Arabic and French are mainly spoken. It is said that French is not the official language, but there are the most people who speak.

Especially, Casablanca, the town where I am deployed, is the largest economic city in Morocco. It seems that French is a major. In fact, Arabic and French can be chosen almost for web pages such as train, bus, hotel and support organizations. Unfortunately, there are few cases where we could chose English.

So, for daily conversation, I began studying French.

I couldn't finde reference books that can be easily handled Arabic, and we can not read letters at all, I have decided to remember only greetings.

CSCチームのメンバーとの英語に、日々、四苦八苦している毎日ですが、モロッコでは英語が通じるわけではありません。

モロッコの公用語は、「アラビア語」と「ベルベル語」の二つです。しかし、かつてフランス領だったこともあり、実際にはアラビア語とフランス語が主に話されている言語です。公用語ではないフランス語が、実質的に話す人が最も多い、と言われています。

特に、私が派遣される町、カサブランカは、モロッコ最大の経済都市。フランス語がメジャーと考えてよいようです。実際、電車やバス、ホテルや支援先の団体のホームページは、殆どアラビア語とフランス語が選択できるようになっています。残念ながら、英語が選択できるケースは殆どありません。

そこで、日常会話くらいは、と、フランス語の勉強を急遽始めました。

残念ながらアラビア語は手軽に試せる参考書がなく、また、そもそも文字を読むことが出来ないので、挨拶を覚えるにとどめることにしました。

Memories of japan / 日本の思い出

Making a 30-minute conference call with team members repeatedly, I aware many team member who have experienced visiting Japan.

A member said, "Limited express train from Tokyo to Kyoto was amazing. What is it to say? " Another member said "Kinkakuji was amazing." "I went to Akihabara.". "I want to go to Hiroshima when I go next time" and so on.

I feel that "Cool Japan" are going well.

Among them, I was surprised, a member said "I have been to Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hokkaido, Tottori!" Hokkaido is also surprised, but in spite of Hokkaido, I asked "Why, Tottori?." While waiting for the answer, I thought that "What should I sad for sand dunes in English.". But the answer was surprising .

"Detective Conan!"

As a creator of "Detective Conan", Aoyama Gyosechi's hometown, I have read somewhere that they are making city with caracters of Detective Conan.

Every week, I am watching the broadcast with my son! Talking to and etc, it gets excited. It is cool if you can say "Edogawa Conan, Detective!" In English. I want to know the translation.

By the way, in America, "Detective Conan" seems to be titled "Case Closed" in relation to rights.

Also, the dune is "(Sand) dune". By the way, there was a movie with such a name.

チームメンバーと３０分の電話会議を繰り返していて気が着くのは、日本とを訪れた経験がある人が多いことです。

あるメンバーは「東京から京都まで行く、特急電車がすごかった。何て言ったかな？」と興奮気味。別のメンバーは「金閣寺がすごかった」。「秋葉原に行ったよ」。「次に行くときは、広島に行きたいんだ」などとも。

「Cool Japan」の施策がうまくいっているのを、肌で感じます。

その中でも驚いたのは「私は、東京・京都・大阪・北海道・鳥取に行ったことあるよ！」と言うメンバー。北海道も驚きですが、思わず「なぜに、鳥取？」と聞いてしまいました。答えを待つ間「砂丘って、英語でなんていうのかな・・・Sand landって、あれは鳥山明かな・・・」などと考えてしまいましたが、返ってきた答えは、意外でした。

Detective Conan!

確か「名探偵コナン」の作者、青山剛昌の出身地なので、コナンにちなんだ街づくりをしている・・・というのを、昔どこかで読んだ記憶が蘇りました。毎週、息子と放送を見ているよ！などと話して、盛り上がったり。「江戸川コナン、探偵さ！」って英語で言えたらかっこいいなぁ。訳を知りたいなぁ。

ちなみに、「名探偵コナン」は「Detective Conan」ですが、アメリカでは権利の関係で「Case Closed」というタイトルのようです。

また、砂丘は「(Sand) dune」。そういえば、そんな名前の映画もあったなぁ。

Pre-Work, before CSC deployment is 3 months. At the weekly checkpoint, the facilitator recommends

"Connect with 2 other participants this week, maybe a 30 min call each"

Let's talk to someone for 30 minutes. At first, it was "really do it?", but as one started, it would proceed. I also talked with members of about 12/14 on a one-on-one as of today.

 Because there is a time difference, time adjustment is tough. The schedule was not quite suitable. Members who are on customer site in the daytime  can not make a phone call. Everybody do not used to dor accustomed to calculating the time difference, gather in different time. Trouble appeared.  But I want to have for opportunities to talk with all members.

30分間、誰かと話してみましょう、という宿題。最初は「本当にやるの」という感じでしたが、一人が始めると進んでいくもので、私も今日時点で、14人中12人のメンバーと、１対１で会話しました。

時差があるので、時間調整も大変。日程の候補がなかなかすり合わなかったり。日中お客様サイトにいるメンバーは、電話が出来なかったり。時差の計算に慣れていなくて、お互い違う時間だと思っていたり。トラブルはつきません。でもコツコツと機会を伺って、モロッコ出発前には全てのメンバーと会話したいな、と思っています。

今日の写真は、サハラ砂漠。

過去にモロッコに派遣された日本の参加者の話を聞くと、必ず薦められるのが砂漠ツアーです。週末は、イベントなどがない場合は比較的自由に過ごせるので、私も是非行きたいのですが…。カサブランカは、砂漠からは遠いので、難しいかもしれません。

Cultural Profile / 文化的プロファイル

There are various menus in 3-month Pre-Work before CSC deployment and one of the interesting lesson is creating cultural profiles.

If cultural backgrounds are different, how you capture things will naturally change. However, it's hard to know that when I am in the same cultural background. Tools are available to obtain clues to notice. If you answer about 30 simple questions, personal culture profile will be generated. It can compare your profile with the average of ethnic groups (eg Japanese or Moroccans).

The following axis shows the characteristics of that ethnic group and the characteristics of the respondents themselves.
"Task-oriented " or "Human relations".
"explicit communication" or "implicit communication".
"Indivisual" or "group".
"take risks" or "avoid risks".
"tight on time" or "free for time".
"Share power" or "concentrate power"
"Linear logic" or "Cyclic logic".
"based on facts" or "based on thought"
"simple" or "complex".

Japanese people seem to be relatively similar to Moroccans. The difference is that the Moroccans are "free in time, and based on thought" for Japanese who "strictly time, and based on facts". Although it may be easy to become familiar with a relatively similar background, but ..., in the first place, myself is considerably divergent from the Japanese.  I am amazed at the result.

CSC派遣前、3ヶ月に渡るPre-Workには、様々なメニューがあるのですが、その中でも興味深かったものの一つが、文化的なプロファイルを作成するというものです。

文化的な背景が異なれば、物事をどのように捉えるかは当然、変わってきます。しかし、同じ文化的な背景に身をおいていると、そのことにはなかなか気がつきません。気がつく手がかりを得るためのツールが準備されています。30くらいの簡単な質問に答えると、その人の文化プロファイルが生成されます。これを、民族（たとえば日本人やモロッコ人）の平均的なものと比べる、というものです。

以下の軸で、その民族の特徴と、回答者自身の特徴が示されます。
「任務重視の関係」か「人間関係」か。
「明示的な関係中心」か「暗示的な関係中心」か。
「個人的な関係」か「グループでの関係」か。
「リスクを取る」か「リスクを避ける」か。
「時間に厳しい」か「自由」か。
「権力を共有する」か「集中する」か。
「線形の論理」か「循環的な論理」か。
「事実に基づく」か「思考に基づく」か。
「単純」か「複雑」か。

日本人は、比較的モロッコ人と似ているように見えます。違う点は、「時間に厳しく事実重視」の日本人に対して、「時間には自由で思考重視」のモロッコ人。比較的に似た背景を持っていると、親しくなりやすいかもしれませんが・・・。
しかし、そもそも　私自身が、日本人からかなり乖離していています。私が日本人らしくない、という結果が垣間見れます。いろいろと考え出すと、夜寝れなくなりそうな結果に驚きです。

My mission is ... / 活動のテーマは...

 

Team "Morocco 12" consists of 15 members. In actual activities, not all 15 people act on the same theme. We are devided 4 - 5 sub-groups, and each group will carry out support activities for different themes and different organizations. At the telephone conference yesterday , the members of the sub-group, the organizations to support, and the mission were presented from our activitie's cordinator, PYXERA Global team.

I will work for the OCP Foundation, with members, from US and China and . OCP is a foundation made by companies conducting quarrying and exporting of natural resources in Morocco and export of fertilizer, and seems to be particularly active in human resource development.

The theme of activity is education problem. In Morocco, especially in the rural areas, there is difference between public school and private school. And dropout from school seems to be a problem. Although it seems that tutor has proved to show certain effect, but it is difficult to receive such services in rural areas, both financially and geographically. Our mission is to design an online platform where OCP Foundation volunteers can act as individuals or group tutor.

Anyway, the theme of the activity has been presented. In this week, three sub-team member are scheduled for conference to discuss our mission.

Morocco 12チームは、15人のメンバーで構成されます。実際の活動では15人全員が同じテーマに向けた活動をする訳ではなく、2～3人のサブグループで、それぞれが別のテーマ、別の団体に向けた支援活動を実施します。派遣一ヶ月を切った昨日の進捗確認のチェックポイントの電話会議で、ついに、サブグループのメンバーと、支援先の団体、支援テーマが、活動をコーディネートしてくれている、PYXERA Global のチームから発表になりました。

私は、アメリカ・中国のメンバーと三人で、OCP Foundationに対して、活動を行います。OCPは、モロッコの天然資源の採石・輸出や、肥料の輸出を実施している会社が作る財団で、特に人材開発に力を入れた活動をしているようです。

活動のテーマは、教育問題。モロッコでは、公立学校と私立学校との差が、特に田舎では激しいようで、学校からのドロップアウトが問題になっているようです。家庭教師が一定の効果を示すことが証明されているようですが、田舎の地域では、金銭的にも地理的にも、そのようなサービスを受けることが難しいようです。こういった中、OCP Foundationのボランティアが、個人、または集団家庭教師として活動できる、オンラインのプラットフォームのデザインをすることが、私達の使命のようです。

とにもかくにも、活動テーマは決まりました。早速、今週どこかで、サブチームの3人で作戦会議予定です。

Souvenir #1 "Origami" / おみやげ１ おりがみ

Giveing some "souvenir" in the range that is allowed on the business practices is more effectiv way to reduce the distance between the team members or  Moroccan people and I. This can provide an indication of Japanese culture easily.

It's very ordinary way, I tried to make a Tsuru(Bird in Japan) in Origami.

... But, something different (green one). I try many times, and finaly I was able to fold the correctly Tsuru. Also jewelry box, a little modification of the crane, can fold.

... By the way, Tsuru is a "crane" in English, the same spelling and pronunciation as the "crane" in the construction site. I wonder if they can understand my explanation of Tsuru, or crane. Is is better for us to the explain simply "Japanease bird".

Origami is very easy way to embody the Japanese culture, even though 1 piece of paper. I wish this impress everybody.

商習慣上許される範囲での「おみやげ」が、モロッコの人や、チームメンバーとの距離を縮める、と、CSCの先輩達のアドバイスがありました。日本文化を簡単に示すものを提供できるこが、おそらくポイントになって来るはず。

そこで”ベタ”ではあるのですが、久しぶりに、折り紙で鶴を作ってみました。

…でも、どこかおかしい（緑色の方）。何羽か折って、やっと正しく鶴を折ることができました。また鶴を少し変形した、宝石箱も折ることができるようになりました。

…ところで、鶴は英語で"crane"ですが、工事現場とかの「クレーン」と同じ綴り、発音です。通じるのかなぁ…。説明は単に"bird"とした方がいいかなぁ、などと、悩みます。

折り紙は、紙1枚さえあれば、日本の文化を示すことができますね。簡単でかつ効果的な方法として活躍を期待です。

ただ、こういう"おみやげ"を、いくつか用意していかねばなりません
